Shockwave therapy (aka Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy or ESWT) is a newer technology used with very positive results for various musculoskeletal conditions, including plantar fasciitis, sprained ankles, some tendinopathies, previous scarred tissues (i.e. surgeries and injuries) and various aches and pains. Evidence varies by condition, so treatment suitability is determined during an individual assessment.
It helps stimulate the delivery of nutrients to the affected area and stimulates the mitochondria that increases production of ATP to promote repair previously scarred tissues.
It is not the most comfortable treatment as we are searching for a 7/10 on pain scale while finding hot spots, and letting it sit on the location until the pain subsides to a 3-4/10. Each treat usually lasts 20 minutes per region. Many people equate it to similar feeling of getting a tattoo, but a little bit deeper.
After each treatment, we advise each patient to hydrate, move and avoid taking NSAIDs. Most treatments usually last about a week before they need another treatment.
It is gererally a safe treatment, however there are specific cases where we are unable to treat due to safety. These include treating on the abdomen, pelvis and lower back in pregnant individuals, over malignant tumors, infected skin, open wounds, local osteomelitis or the lungs.
Additionally, those with bleeding disorders, on blood thinners, pace makers, recent steroid injections and young people with immature growth plates will not be treated.
